In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and mixed spice powder.
In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk.
Add the melted butter and egg to the milk mixture.
Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
Incorporate the dried fruit and cherries into the dough.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
Punch down the dough, then divide into 12 pieces.
Shape each piece into a bun and place on a baking tray.
Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220°C.
Mix flour and water for the cross, pipe it on top of the buns.
Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown, then glaze with apricot jam.
