Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds optional

Instructions

  • Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Combine flour and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add yeast mixture to flour and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  • Shape each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center.
  • Boil water in a large pot, add baking soda, and boil each bagel for 1 minute on each side.
  • Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet, sprinkle with seeds, and bake for 20 minutes until golden.
